As we have entered into a new year, something that I have noticed about myself is that I am not as free as I thought I was. Not that I felt like I had it all together, because I know I don’t and I’m still a work in progress. I just hadn’t realized that my past still has some chains holding me down. There is still parts of my past that I am allowing to hold me back and hinder me from moving forward into the incredible life God has for me. Sometimes as you go on living life, it will be revealed to you what things, people or situations that you’re still allowing to control you and what you believe about yourself. Those things can have you believing things about yourself that are lies. Which inhibits you to live and act as if you are not free. If God didn’t say it or it doesn’t line up with what God would say about you, then it’s a lie. Don’t allow the negative things others have said or done change the way you choose to live your life. 1 Peter 2:16 (AMP) [Live} as free people, [yet] without employing your freedom as a pretext for wickedness; but [live at all times] as servants of God. Once I became aware that I was still bound I began to have the desire to want to be free. Free from the thoughts of my past, free from the negative emotions it causes me to feel and free to be me with not having to feel like I have explain anything to anyone. Free in the Webster dictionary means release from captivity, confinement, or slavery. Not bound, confined, or detained by force. Capable of moving or turning in any direction. It says in Galatians 5:1 In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have put off]. I needed to come to the realization that Jesus died so that I would be free. That means I would be free from anything that bound or enslaved me.
The word Freedom in the Webster dictionary means the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. The state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. Liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another. God’s word says in John 8:36 (AMP) So if the Son liberates you [makes you free men], then you are really and unquestionably free. I learned I needed to walk in freedom because God’s word says I am free. In order to walk in that freedom I had to learn how to lay my burdens on the cross. Everything that has had me in bondage and enslaved me, I must lay it down and give it over to God. It is a new year, it is the right time and a new season to put it on the cross and leave it there, never to pick it up to carry it again. Letting go of it all and turning it over to Jesus who said in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are wary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and burden is light.” He already paid the cost when he went to the cross. It says in Romans 8:1-5 (MSG) With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ’s being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death. God went for the jugular when he sent his own Son. He didn’t deal with the problem as something remote and unimportant. In his Son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all. The law code, weakened as it always was by fractured human nature, could never have done that. The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn’t deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us. So many times we tell God we are giving this over to Him and then we go back and pick it up like we couldn’t trust him to carry the burden for us. We think we have the power to fix it all by ourselves. Well it says in Romans 8:6-8 (MSG) Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored. Those burdens are heavy and it cost us a lot when we don’t truly allow God to carry them for us. It cost us joy, happiness, peace, freedom and so many other things including blessings that we miss out on because we are so focused on the burden and trying to fix it ourselves that we forget that we already have the solution to the burden who is Jesus Christ. Whatever you are still burdened with leave it with God and pray to Him to help you to not pick it back up again so that you can live in total freedom.
When Jesus went to heaven, God gave us the Holy Spirit to dwell in us. God lives in each one of us because we have the Holy Spirit. For it says in 2 Corinthians 3:17 (AMP) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, freedom). Since the Holy Spirit lives in us and wherever God is there is freedom, than all we have to do is walk in this freedom. God gave us freedom and He lives in us to help us walk in the freedom that He gave us. So everyday we should be walking in the assurance of the freedom God gave us. We have to learn to walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-17 (AMP) But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do. So in order to walk in the Holy Spirit we have to seek God and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. In order to walk in the Spirit, we can’t be trying to do what we want, but we need to be doing what God wants us to do. Galatians 5:25 (AMP) If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage—our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit]. Every day we must walk in the Spirit in our thoughts and through our actions by using God’s word. Alistair Begg said “When we become captive to the Word of God, then we discover true freedom.”
God gave me this word so that I could become free and let all of you know that you can become free too. Isaiah 61:1 (AMP) The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, becasuse the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound. Just as much as I want to be free and live free, I desire that very much for you also. No longer allowing yourself or the way that you live your life bound from anything of this world. Jesus went to the cross so that you would be free. God’s word says that you are free. So you are free to walk in the freedom that has been given to you. Galatians 5:13-14 (AMP) For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; only [do not let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or excuse [for selfishness], but through love you should serve one another. For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is complied with in the one precept, You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself. As you walk in freedom from this day on from whatever had you bound, be sure to ask God to reveal to you someone who needs help walking in freedom too.
Steps to be free:
Come to the realization I needed to be free
Have the desire to be free
Seek God for freedom and what His word say about your freedom
Put into action how to live in total freedom
Help someone else become free after I have walked in freedom myself
Lord we thank you for today and the opportunity you have given us to become free from what has held us captive. If we are not aware of what is holding us in bondage in our lives, Lord make us so aware of it in a way that we know it is you telling us where we are enslaved and need to be free. Show us what we need to see in order for us to walk in the freedom that you have already given us. Help us to walk more in your Spirit and less in our flesh. Romans 8:5 (AMP) For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the Holy Spirit. God we need you in order to be able to walk in your Spirit, so that we may set our minds and actions on things that are pleasing to you. Lord help us to turn over what ever it is that is weighing us down, keeping us in the dark or hindering us from moving into the incredible life that you have for us. Let us do as it says in Isaiah 43:18-19 Do not remember the former things, or ponder the things of the past. God guide us in taking our thoughts captive and meditating on what your word says about us day and night. Fill us God with more of you and less of ourselves. Lord as we overcome being free in whatever area we are struggling in or that you bring awareness of where we need to get free from let us do as it say in Philipians 3:13-I4 do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Help me God to not allow anything I am currently going through or anything from my past to entangle me in shackles, chains or bondages. I pray that every wall is torn down that I have put to protect myself from things or people, and I give you complete authority over my protection from people, things and situations that are out of my control. Free me from what others have said about me, or what I think they thought about me. Free me from the approval that I sometimes feel I need from others and free me from caring about the dispproval that people give me in my acts of obedience to what you have called me to do. Lord let me not walk anymore enslaved to anything or anyone but you. Lord as your word says in John 14:27 Let your perfect peace calm me in every circumstance and give me courage and strength for every challenge. But Lord let me walk in today as a new creature that you have made me to be as it says in 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life]. But all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ [making us acceptable to Him] and gave us the ministry of reconciliation [so that by our example we might bring others to Him]. Lord help us to pass on what you have taught us in seeking you and our own freedom to help someone else in bondage. Let us from this day walk in the new life that you have given us through us finding freedom in you. Let everything in our life be in complete alignment with your word, your ways and your will for our lives. We love you and appreciate all you do. In Jesus Mighty Name, Amen!!!
